Resilient by Rick Hanson BOOK 2 POST 2

Resilient by Rick Hanson, PhD · OverDrive: ebooks, audiobooks, and more for libraries and schools

Resilient by Rick Hanson uses a blend of positive psychology, neuroscience, and useful life practices to explain the importance of resilience in everyday scenarios. Hanson believes (which I wholeheartedly agree with) that resilience is needed in our day-to-day life rather than solely for events that require enduring terrible conditions. Resilience is needed to cope with stress, raise a family, heal from old pain or traumas, deal with work, and so much more.

My thought process regarding resilience previous to this book was also that the action pertains more towards life changing events, like pushing past a tragedy.  However, this book taught me that resilience is a practice, and, like all practices, requires development. Through this constant practice you can achieve a more improve state of mental well-being. Who wouldn't want that?

In the book, the author explains that this road towards a better state of mental well being begins with self compassion. Compassion is a mixture of two things: empathy and a desire to alleviate pain. Often times we are empathetic towards friends and family members and begin to make the best efforts to alleviate their pain in hope that they begin to feel better, yet many of us don't practice compassion with ourselves. Better yet self compassion has a positive correlation with resilience. The more compassionate, the more resilient you become in the long run.

On top of practicing self compassion, two other things you could do to build resilience are practicing mindfulness to be better equipped for difficult moments and having the courage to address and make decisions within your life.

  5. Hey Marc, I also chose to read Resilient by Rick Hanson. I think that a lot of the findings you explained in your post are things that I also observed when I read it. Like the fact that you have to practice and implement frameworks in your brain to become resilient and make them second-nature. Also, Hanson’s point on self-compassion was a new way of thinking that I enjoyed learned about. Great post!
